Introduction- What is Data Security?

Data security refers to the process of protecting your data from malicious attacks, unauthorized access, unwanted data modifications or data loss. With the growing rates of cyber-crimes, the IT and computer science specialists are working very hard to preserve the sanctity of data. They have devised certain methods through which an IT organization can protect their critical data. However, no such ways of data security are yet discovered through which we can ensure 100% protection of our data.

Importance of Data Security in Today’s IT Industry:

In today’s world of information technology, data is considered the most critical asset for any IT organization but this is not the only reason behind protecting your data. One such law is called the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). European Union (EU) enforced this law on 25 May 2018. According to this law, no organization will be allowed to share their data with any organization without properly securing the sensitive information of their clients. Whosoever will breach this regulation will have to pay an amount of 20 million euros as a penalty. This law clearly identifies the criticality of data protection.

Which Types of Data must be Protected at any Cost?

Every organization works on or produces a different type of data and the data that is critical for one organization might not be that important for another organization. It all depends upon the context of use of that data. However, there are certain types of data that are universally accepted to be critical. Some of these types of data are as follows:

●      Personally Identifiable Information (PII) – Includes SSN, contact numbers, addresses etc.

●      Protected Healthcare Information (PHI) – Includes patient’s medical history, diseases, and diagnosis.

●      Credit Card Information (CCI) – Includes account number, transaction history, account balance etc.
